An isolated vineyard in the Malgas ward near the mouth of the Breede River– called Sijnn (pronounced Seine) by the original Khoisan inhabitants. Perched on a plateau of slate and rolled stones, about 15km from the southern oceans of Africa.
Grown as bush vines. These vines are situated in front of the tasting room, and already 17 years old. VR642 clone growing on R99. Blocks 17, 28 and 29. Yield: 3-4 tons/ha
Growing season of this vintage started off very dry and warm, but in October and November of 2020, we had a lot of rain, 150mm. Harvest saw cooler weather, with cool nights throughout the harvest period, producing wines with excellent acidities. A small crop, great quality.
Handpicked and sorted in the vineyards in the early morning to ensure beautiful cool grapes arrive at the cellar. 100% wholebunch pressed and fermented in a 400L barrel in 3rd fill French Oak. Left on the lees for 10 months, adding texture and balance. Lightly fined with bentonite and bottled by hand.
Bottling date: 14/12/2021
Production: 689 x 750ml
Lush gold colour. Rich apricot, nutty nose with a lively freshness. Beautiful burnt orange and mineral palate. A fine and balanced acidity, well integrated with the wood. Lovely peach pith, apricots and nuttiness. Loads of texture on the nose and palate, expressing true viognier. It is really expressive of the area and it captures the cooler dry area of Malgas. Paired best with most rich dishes ranging from Risotto to fish, lightly spiced chicken and even good with lamb.
