68% Chenin Blanc, 28% Verdelho, 4% Viognier
The effects of the drought in the Swartland the last few years forced many vineyards to be harvested earlier than usual to retain freshness. In 2019 though, we had extremely high malic acids and we could afford to wait a bit longer for the grapes to develop more flavour without losing tension in wine. The result is a wine with a lot of focus and lime-like acidity to back up the fruit and texture normally associated with the Rall White. For myself, this is the most exciting of the now 12 vintages of this wine. Chenin Blanc 68%; Verdelho 28% and Viognier 4% were all fermented and matured separately and blended after 10 months before bottling at around 12 months. Only seasoned oak, mostly 225 litre and in this vintage around 10% concrete on the Chenin.
