Hand crafted from our slightly drier Shiraz vineyard, located at a lower vineyard site with Oakleaf soils and a warmer microclimate. This Shiraz is crafted in a classic style, bold in flavour with luscious dark fruit characters and spice yet elegant due to the high altitude and proximity to the ocean.
ORIGIN: Helderberg, Stellenbosch
ASPECT: West & North-West facing slopes
SOIL: Decomposed granite – Oakleaf, Tukulu
ALTITUDE: 335 m above sea level
PROXIMITY TO THE OCEAN: 9 km from False Bay
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
An exceptional cold winter and overall cool weather with above average rainfall made for the perfect growing season. Winter rainfall was 607 mm and there was snow on the peak of the Helderberg Mountain above the farm. A cool and wet budding season with less wind than expected during flowering, made for a challenging period. With 50 mm rain during ripening and temperatures rising moderately, we experienced a fairly cool period. Moisture levels remained favourable and overall the conditions were ideal – one of the best seasons experienced to date with excellent concentration and elegant flavour in our berries.
MATURATION: 16 months in French oak barrels, 35 % new
OPTIMUM SERVING TEMPERATURE 15 – 17 °C
TASTING NOTES
COLOUR: Light Purple Garnet
NOSE: The nose gives distinctive creamy red fruit elegance with delicate violets, a hint of tobacco leaf and leather. Black olive salinity builds alongside restrained charcuterie and white pepper spice.
PALATE: This wine is characterised by precision rather than power, with breezy aromas of lovely crisp red fruit, savoury black olive and sweet spice joined by a cool touch of fresh herbal notes. Juicy and bright with freshly picked florals and supportive tannins that are soft, fine and delectably moreish on the fresh, lifted finish.
