Hand crafted from our slightly drier Shiraz vineyard, located at a lower vineyard site with Oakleaf soils and a warmer microclimate. This Shiraz is crafted in a classic style, bold in flavour with luscious dark fruit characters and spice yet elegant due to the high altitude and proximity to the ocean.
ORIGIN: Helderberg, Stellenbosch
ASPECT: West & North-West facing slopes
SOIL: Decomposed granite – Oakleaf, Tukulu
ALTITUDE: 335 m above sea level
PROXIMITY TO THE OCEAN: 9 km from False Bay
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
A delayed, but good, winter rainfall allowed for adequate replenishing of reserves. A cool and wet spring allowed soil profiles to become well saturated. Winter was not as cold as the previous year but there was sufficient building up of reserves. A cool budding period was experienced with delayed bud break. Veraison occurred later and ripening was prolonged due to low day temperatures which allowed for exceptional colour and flavour in the berries. A vintage showing high quality wines with good ageing potential.
MATURATION: 16 months in French oak barrels, 35 % new
OPTIMUM SERVING TEMPERATURE 15 – 17 °C
TASTING NOTES
COLOUR: Light Purple Garnet
NOSE: Quite light and red fruited on the nose with a raspberry & redcurrant core andx a touch of white pepper spice which draws you into the glass, revealing a lovely floral perfume with nuances of blueberry, forest floor and crushed cinnamon.
PALATE: Waves and layers of flavour with both purple and red fruit with a twist of black peppercorn amid a pleasingly tight and grainy structure. Enjoyably fresh with succulent tannins and some texture, showing real elegance and length, finishing with a touch of lavender.
