+David & Nadia is a first generation family owned Swartland project and we are members of the Swartland Independent Producers. With family roots in the Swartland dating back to 1757, we focus on dry land farmed bush vines, soil diversity, climate and people of one region only.
In the vineyard we aim for biological farming whilst more vineyards are being farmed more organically year on year and in the cellar we work as natural as possible. It is all about the soil and vineyards after all. We believe in a pure, fresh and natural approach as style where site and soil are at work with minimal influence from a winemaking point of view.
The Hoë-Steen vineyard was planted in 1968 west of Malmesbury towards Darling, in deep, red iron and clay rich soils on limestone. Most probably the deepest soils we work with in the Swartland. This vineyard is a late ripening vineyard due to south facing slopes and the prevailing south-eastern wind during the ripening season. This vineyard was planted on a “massale” selection method and grafted in the vineyard onto the root stocks a year after the root stocks were planted. A few Cape Riesling (Crouchen blanc), False Pedro, Palomino, Sémillon and Clairette blanche vines have been discovered since then. The vineyard remains predominantly Steen for us and we see it as part of the
Cape’s old vineyard history which we are privileged to be working with. We picked this vineyard on three different dates during mid/end February after which it was hand sorted, whole bunch pressed and matured in old French oak barrels for a year. This is the oldest Chenin blanc vineyard that we work with, and as such it is a Certified Heritage Vineyard, confirmed by the OVP seal on the back label.
The Swartland is known for extremely warm summers with a low average winter rainfall. On the west, the Swartland borders on the Atlantic ocean and on the east inland by mountain ranges. Due to this location, a large diurnal shift is observed where the average daytime temperatures are much higher than the average night time temperatures. All of our vineyards are however inland and our climate is considered to be mediterranean.
