We took a trip backwards in time to make a thoroughly modern wine.

A wine that will age beautifully for at least the next ten years. A tribute hopefully to the age & concentration of the vines, as well as to low, very low interruptive winemaking… a natural wine in every sense!

Finally bottled totally “naturally” with no cold stabilization or fining. Remarkably the wine is crystal clear, slightly golden in a good way, with a lime green rim.

How did I do that you ask?… Well it’s unfiltered, unrefined and just a Dirty Little Secret – naturally!

This DLS project has evolved and become more complex since we selected this incredible vineyard in 2015. These vines are bush or gobelet trained, planted with no irrigation in totally sandy soils of decomposed granite at approx 650m above sea level facing the west coast and Elands Bay. Even more importantly this vineyard was planted in 1959…

Such potential and such promise, the challenge was could I do it justice? And what was the best way to illustrate the produce of this exceptional, totally rare and unique vineyard?

I decided that the most complete picture of this amazing vineyard was in fact the complex blend of multiple vintages – stored in very old French Oak 400L barrels as blends across the years and then added to and abetted with fresh juice for each release. This is our third release from 6 vintages and somehow this is, I believe, the most complete to date with a luscious and complex blend of 4 vintages from 2017-2020.

The wine is somehow austere but rich, elegant and driven by a totally mineral core that holds all of the fruit and lasts forever on the palate.

Only 7 x 400L barrels produced.

Crafted to age and gain complexity in the bottle.

GRAPE VARIETIES: Chenin Blanc

TASTING NOTES

Made from grapes sourced from a very old dryland vineyard in the Piekenierskloof region planted in 1965.

The main objective was to let this interesting fruit source speak for itself and show its typicity and specific character, ancient bush vines with a great view!

The result? A tribute to the age and concentration of the vines, the low yield and the non-intrusive way of creating this wine.

This wine has been handled as gently as possible. It is unfiltered, unfined and may form harmless crystals – truly a sign of quality!

Only 7 x 400L barrels produced.

A tight, bright, mineral wine with texture and mouthfeel and a hint of phenolic structure, a soft acidity and a pear drop intensity.

Crafted to age and gain complexity in the bottle.
