Tasting notes
This is a special wine for us, made only in outstanding years. It is a single vineyard wine and from the oldest block on the farm. It was planted on the recommendation of the previous owner, a widow, in 1994. We use only the top few rows of this block between 10 and 15 rows for this special wine. This part of the block is planted with a special “clone” of Cabernet Sauvignon, clone 46 C, which is maybe not so aromatic but instead shows lovely mid palate structure. The block is farmed organically and like most of our vineyards on the farm, no irrigation is used. We usually pick this part of the block in the beginning of March. We tried to avoid any shriveled berries to truly get a good varietal expression. Everything is handpicked and we do have a very strict sorting regime to remove all unwanted green stems in the fermenting vessel. Two to three 4 tons open fermentation tanks are filled and inoculated with our special Red wine yeast. The best tank will be selected to end up being “Widows Block”. Deep dark colour. Oodles of cassis with lovely spice, leather and cigar box on the nose. Medium bodied with some classy dry, almost chunky, dry land tannin evident. The wine shows lovely depth on the mid palate with balanced wood adding complexity. Still an infant this wine has the potential to keep 10 years after harvest. Be patient and see this beauty grow old.
