Sequillo comes from the Latin and means an arid, dry place of great purity: a very good description of the Swartland in South Africa. It is the Swartland that the Sadie Family strive to capture in their Sequillo wines, vintage after vintage. Their wines must reflect the soils and have a strong sense of place; and this expression of place must be unrefined and unfiltered.

Vineyards: Swartland Area
Grapes : Syrah, Cinsault, Tinta Barocca
Soils: Various – Granite & Gravel & Slate & Clay
A blend of Syrah, Cinsaut and Tinta Barocca.
Vinification
The grapes are de-stemmed into 4800 litre concrete fermenters and then left for three days for a cold-soaking process. The wines ferment at about 24 ° C for a period of three weeks. The tanks are left for a two week post-fermentation maceration and then pressed in a small basket press.
Oaking
The ageing of the wine takes place in wooden casks for the first 12 months and then the wine is racked to concrete tanks for the last 12 months. We bottle directly from the fine lees.
The 2012 Sequillo Red blend is different from the previous reds in they we did not include Carignan and Grenache: the quality of these two grapes was not sufficient and they opted to leave them out of the final cuvee. The result is a much more focused and linear bottling and possibly one of the best reds since 2005. Unfortunately there is not much of it to go around.
The ageing was also slightly altered for this vintage as they did not do the 2nd part of the 24 month ageing in wooden casks but in concrete tanks, to attempt to preserve much more of the pure grape flavours, and in many ways it was a huge success.
