Much like ours, the story of Juana Maria de los Dolores León Smith is one of devotion and enduring commitment. She met and married Captain Harry Smith in 1812 at the age of 14. During their 40-year long marriage, Lady Smith was constantly at her husband’s side, riding with him into the battlefield and accompanying him on diplomatic postings, including two to South Africa where he served as Governor of the Cape Colony and High Commissioner. While Governor of the Cape Colony, Harry named the small Klein Karoo town Ladismith after his wife and life-long companion.
With its distinctive Klein Karoo character, Ladismith Klein Karoo 8 Year Pot Still Brandy is made from the Colombard grapes that flourish in the region. Sanctioned for the production of cognac, quality Colombard grapes are key to this very elegant and perfectly-balanced brandy. Colombard grapes are picked almost ripe to form a high-quality brandy-base wine and then double-distilled in a stainless steel pot still, specially designed and built by the late Oom Fasie van Niekerk. It is then aged in French oak casks for a minimum of eight years. Over time, the fragrant wood imparts a deep, golden colour with rich, complex aromas. The nose is floral perfume with jasmine, orange blossoms, subtle almond and sweet vanilla. The aromas carry through to the palate with hints of cinnamon and sun-dried apple adding to a most enjoyable, soft finish.
Brought to you by the skilled hands of our brandy masters, Ladismith Klein Karoo 8 Year Pot Still Brandy is the perfect accompaniment to lunches in the warm summer sun, enjoyed simply with ice or a dash of sparkling water. In the winter, pair it with malva pudding (a popular South African classic) or with a chocolate truffle and rich espresso.
